3D Scanning Technology Breaks Through Time Barrier

Digitization reproduces history, and informatization inherits culture

Customer: Ningxia Museum

Product: PRINCE series 3D scanner

Scanning object: Cultural relics collection of Museum

Scanning requirement: Obtain 3D data of the appearance of cultural relics

Aim: Archiving the digital information of 3D reconstruction of cultural relics to facilitate the establishment of digital museums, the restoration of cultural relics, and the possibility of providing interactive research exchanges between experts and lovers of cultural relics

1.Museum Artifacts Digitization

With the continuous development of 3D digitization technology, the digitization of cultural relics has gradually become a major trend in the construction of museum digitization. The continuous maturity of 3D laser scanning technology has provided high efficiency and solid technical force for the 3D digitization project of museum relics.

What are digital cultural relics?

Digital cultural relic is to use the latest 3D modeling technology or the 3D automatic imaging system to conduct the digital archive of cultural relic, and achieve the permanent preservation of precious cultural relic. The digital cultural relics technology provides the possibility for the joint research and exchange of cultural relics experts and the wide range of cultural relics amateur.

What is the construction of digital cultural relics?

Data collection: 3D scanning the 3D shape of the cultural relics, and the obtained 3D data of the cultural relics is archived into the museum database, which facilitates the later virtual restoration, data research exchange, and virtual reality museum construction.

Digital product production: Virtual reality exhibition hall, museum display show APP, 3D digital virtual museum software, etc.

What are the advantages of museum 3D digitization?

Permanence: Digital cultural relics will not be damaged over time

Integrity: The damaged cultural relics can be virtually repaired by PC to restore the complete state of the cultural relics.

Interactivity: The 3D data information of cultural relics can provide the possibility of joint research and communication for cultural relic experts and enthusiasts.

2.Problems of the museum

In order to present the cultural relics in front of the audiences perfectly, let the audience feel the history in an immersive experience, a musem of Ningxia plans to build a virtual reality museum. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain 3D data of lots of the cultural relics in the museum. However, as most of the unearthed cultural relics are fragile and complex in structure, it is difficult for the general 3D scanning equipment to accurately obtain accurate 3D data of cultural relics without destroying them. So the museum came to Scantech, hoping us to provide an efficient and simple solution.

3.The solution of Scantech

After understanding the basic situation of the museum’s cultural relics, Scantech found two characteristics:

①Most of the cultural relics are small in size, but there are also large ancient animal models. Therefore, it is necessary to have 3D scanning equipment that can scan all sizes as well as high applicability.

②Some of the cultural relics have very small details, which requires a high degree of detail for 3D scanners.

Comprehensive the above two factors, Scantech decided to adopt PRINCE handheld two-color laser three-dimensional scanner. Its original dual-mode mode can be arbitrary switched according to the size and detail requirements of the scanning object, which meets the 3D scanning requirements of different objects in many aspects.

3D scanning measurement process

Step1: Select the appropriate position to place the reflective marker points according to the size and characteristics of the cultural relics.

Step2: Handheld 3D scanner PRINCE scans cultural relics to generate 3D point cloud data quickly and accurately.

Step3: The 3D point cloud data obtained by 3d scanning constitute the triangular mesh model rapidly.

Step4: The triangular mesh model obtained by scanning and the color texture data obtained by shooting are matched with high-precision by third-party software to generate the 3D model with color texture.

4.3D reconstruction process and results

3D reconstruction of colored glaze

In order not to destroy the integrity of the cultural relics, we can use desktop background function to obtain the shape data of the cultural relics. For the rigid cultural relic, we placed corresponding marking points on the cultural relics, finally, processing the date by a third-party software to get the .stl and .iges common format data easily.

Because the Bodhisattva statue is less than half the size of the palm and the structure is relatively complicated, therefore, during the scanning process, the blue laser mode of the PRINCE handheld 3D scanner is used to finely scan the details to ensure the details are obtained.

(The surface of the gilt bodhisattva statue was still covered with soil when the gilt bodhisattva statue is excavated, so the model obtained by 3D scanning was also a model with soil, and the real details could not be shown.)

5.3D scanning and digitization of cultural relics

3D scanning plays an indispensable role in the field of 3D digitization of museums. Because the original red and blue two-color laser mode of PRINCE series can measure a wide range of different objects easily, one device can meet the requirements of 3D reconstruction all of the cultural relics in the museum. In terms of accuracy, detail and speed, it exceeds the expectations of customers and is fully recognized by the museum. At the same time, the three-dimensional digital data also provides a lot of convenience for museum cultural relics restoration and publicity. Therefore, PRINCE 3D scanner has an irreplaceable advantage in the digitization of cultural relics.
